Today I want to talk about writing routines.

about having them, wanting them or not having one at all and the (social) pressure of it.

Almost every day on instagram I see a post, story or reel about people’s writing routines.

Mostly it starts with lighting a candle, getting your favorite drink or something in that general direction.

But now, what if you don’t have a writing routine?

For instance, I don’t have one and that is completely okay.

My routine is basically opening my laptop or starting my computer and start writing.

I don’t need to set a specific location, favorite snack or drink by my side, I just write.

Don’t get me wrong, setting a routine can be helpful when it comes and helps your creativity flow.

For some people, having a specific type of tea, coffee or other beverage while writing can help trick them into a writing mood, but you don’t have to have a routine.

the end goal is simple, as long as you write, how you get to that stage is completely up to you!

However if you want to try to start a routine, I got some tips:

  • Clean your work space.
  • Write at a certain time/day, whether it is in the morning, after you get home, etc.
  • Get a drink/snack so you don’t have to interrupt your writing by getting up.
  • turn on a playlist, with lyrics or without.

Just remember, you don’t have to have a routine and you can always change it up if you feel like it isn’t working for you!

Hope this helps, because this is something that helped me through some times when I thought I desperately needed a routine when I clearly didn’t.

Just write when it feels right and when the creativity hits you!
