Thanks to Erin Archer for providing an ARC of The King’s Card.
This romantasy book is everything I was hoping for, and sooo much more. It’s a sweeping tale filled with fated mates, Beauty and the Beast vibes, magic, sacrifice, a touch of court intrigue that keeps you turning the pages late into the night and lots of forehead kisses. But beyond the tropes and fantasy elements, this story delivers something deeper: heart.
The protagonist, Mira, is a standout. Her internal struggle between duty and desire, strength and vulnerability makes her deeply relatable. She’s not the kind of heroine who’s perfect or all-powerful, but one who grows in quiet, believable ways. Her journey is about more than just saving others. It’s about realizing she doesn’t always have to do everything alone, even when she’s convinced she must.
This is ultimately a story about found family, healing, and learning that love doesn’t always require sacrifice to be real. Yes, there’s a mating bond (and the slow burn is chef’s kiss), but what made it hit so hard was how grounded it felt. The relationship isn’t just about romantic love, it’s about safety, choice, and mutual respect.Without spoiling anything, I’ll just say: prepare to feel a lot of feelings. The King’s Card is to me beautifully layered with themes of grief, resilience, and learning to let others in. If you love all the things stated above, this book definitely will be something for you.
